Celtic New Age Music

Celtic Music is a broad musical genre that evolved out of folk-music traditions of the Celtic people of Western Europe. The term can refer to both orally-transmitted traditional music and recorded popular music. The term "Celtic Music" can refer to both orally-transmitted traditional music and recorded popular music, but the term Celtic Music primarily describes two things:

  • the music of the people calling themselves Celts
  • the qualities unique to the music of the Celtic Nations

The term Celtic Music is often applied to the music of Ireland and Scotland, however, Irish and Scottish traditional musicians tend to avoid using the term "Celtic music." The music of Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Man, Brittany, Northumbria, Galicia, Cantabria and Asturias, and Northeastern Portugal are also a part of Celtic music. The Celtic musical tradition is also particularly strong in Brittany, where Celtic festivals large and small, celebrating Celtic traditions, are held throughout the year. The Celtic musical tradition encompasses a large number of music festivals, including: Celtic Colours (Cape Breton, Nova Scotia), Festival Internacional do Mundo Celta de Ortigueira (Ortigueira, Galicia), Celtic Connections (Glasgow, Scotland), and Festival Interceltique de Lorient (Lorient, Brittany).
