A Few Moon Facts

Every Day the Moon will Rise in the East and set in the West, same as the Sun. East is
the direction of new beginnings and West is the directions of endings and completion.

The moon is not round, but egg shaped with the large end pointed towards earth.
|
|
|
The Full Moon rises at Sunset, the Dark Moon rises at Sunrise. The First Quarter rises at
Noon and the Last Quarter rises at Midnight. Each day the moon rises approx 50 minutes
later than the day before.

|
The moons radius is 1080 miles and its diameter is 2160 miles. It temperature is approx
96°C of a day and -80°C of a Night. One Moon day equals 27.3 Earth days.

The new moon can not be seen because the illuminated side faces away from the earth. This
occurs when the Moon lines up between the Earth and the Sun.
|
|
|
The moon is actually moving away from earth at a rate of 1.5 inches per year.
|
|
|
Only about 59 percent of the moon's surface is visible to us here on earth. The moon
orbits in such a way that from Earth we only ever see one side of the moon through all
her phases. Hence the expression, The Dark Side of the Moon.

The surface area of the moon is 14,658,000 square miles or 9.4 billion acres. It's
surface gravity is 1/6 that of Earths.

The next Full Moon we are to have that falls on Friday the 13th will be on Friday June
13th in 2014 at 2.14pm AEST. The last one we had was on Friday October 15th 2000 at
7.55pm AEST

The earth rotates about 1000 mph. By comparison, the moon rotates about 10 mph.

On average, there is only one Blue Moon every 33 months. Last time was August of 2004 and
the next one will be in June 2007. A Blue Moon is the second full moon in a calendar
month.

|
A month with no Full moon is one of the rarest things you will ever find. We will only
see 4 in this centuary (based on AEST), February of 2010, 2029, 2048 and 2094. With the
exception of 2094 which has blue moons in Jan and April, Blue moons will occur both in
Jan and March.
