Witch Hunts: 672 AD - 1500 AD

A condensed and nowhere near complete timeline of the atrocities wrought upon suspected witches, but a fair representation of the crimes and injustices committed against many innocent and unsuspecting victims in the name of justice, fairness, and sanctity.

The following timeline is a representative, albeit incomplete rendering of the atrocities wrought upon suspected witches. However, please bear in mind that this list only scratches the surface.

Timeline of Atrocities:

672-735(ca) – Bede wrote History of English, a history of Christianity in England. His book is referred to in the Malleus Maleficarum.

900(ca) – Canon Episcopi.

Exact Date Unknown – Balcoin, Marie: burned in the reign of Henry IV of France.

Exact Date Unknown – 3,000-4,000 killed during Cromwell's tenure in England.

Exact Date Unknown – 30,000 (approx) burned by the Inquisition (not all may have been witches).

Exact Date Unknown – 900 killed in Lorraine, France (years unknown).

Exact Date Unknown – Barton, William: executed in Scotland (year unknown).

Exact Date Unknown – Deiner, Hans: burned at Waldsee, Germany (year unknown).

Exact Date Unknown  – unhome, Margaret: burned in Scotland (year unknown).

1233 – First Papal ordinance directly dealing with witchcraft- Bull by Pope Gregory IX (Ugolino, Count of Segni), to Conrad of Marburg, bidding him to proceed against the Luciferians. July 30 of that year, Conrad of Marburg murdered on the highway in pursuit of his duties.

1234 – 8000 "Stedingers" killed on 27 May, 1234.

1239 – 180 burned for witchcraft at Montwimer, France, on 29 May, 1239.

1258 – Bull by Pope Alexander IV (Rinaldo Conti), to Franciscan Inquisitors, bidding them refrain from judging any cases of witchcraft unless there was some very strong reason to suppose that heretical practice could also be amply proved.

1275 – Barthe, Angela de la: burned at Toulouse, France, in 1275.

1307 – 36 Knights Templar died under torture in France, in October, 1307.

1310 – Albano, Peter of: died in prison circa 1310.

1310 – 54 Knights Templar burned in France, on 12 May, 1310.

1312 – DeMolay, Jacques: Grand Master of the Templars, burned in France on 22 March 1312.

1314 – 39 Knights Templar burned in France, on 18 March 1314.

1315 – Marigny, Enguerrand de: hanged in France in 1315.

1317 – Geraud, Hughes: burned in France in 1317.

1320-1350 – 200+ burned at Carcassonne, France, between 1320-1350.

1323 – "Some" burned at Kilkenny, Ireland, 1323.

1324 – Meath, Petronilla de: burned as a witch, the first such burning in Ireland, on 3 November, 1324.

1324 – Nottingham, John of: died in custody, Coventry, England, 1324.

1330 – Andrius, Barthelemy: burned at Carcassonne, France in 1330.

1330 – Andrius, Jean: burned at Carcassonne, France in 1330.

1330 – Andrius, Phillippe: burned at Carcassonne, France in 1330.

1335 – Ciceron, Andre: burned alive at Carcassone, France, in 1335.

1335 – Delort, Catherine: burned at Toulouse, France, in 1335.

1335 – Georgel, Anna Marie de: burned at Toulouse, France, in 1335.

1335 – Rodier, Catala: burned alive at Carcassone, France, in 1335.

1335 – Rodier, Paul: burned alive at Carcassone, France, in 1335.

1335 – 63 burned at Toulouse, France, in 1335.

1352 – 8 burned at Carcassonne, France, in 1352.

1399 – 1 burned at Berlin, Germany, in 1399.

1400 – "Several" witches burned alive at Simmenthal, Switzerland, circa 1400.

1423 – "Several" burned at Carcassonne, France, in 1423.

1428-1434 – 200+ executed in the Valais, France between 1428-1434.

1428-1447 – 167 executed in l'Isere, France, between 1428-1447.

1431 – d'Arc, Joan: burned at Rouen, France, on 30 May, 1431 (note: the witchcraft charge in this case was -implied- and not specific).

1432 – 16 executed in Toulouse, France, in 1432.

1433 – 8 executed in Toulouse, France, in 1433.

1437 – 150 executed in Briancon, France, in 1437.

1438 – Vallin, Pierre: executed in France, in 1438.

1438 – Greland, Jean: burned at Chamonix, France, in 1438, with 10 others.

1439 – Mazelier, Hanchemand de: arrested at Neuchatel, Germany 1439.

1440 – Rais, Gilles de: on charges of witchcraft, executed 26 October, 1440.

1441 – Bolingbroke, Roger: hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn, England, on 18 November, 1441.

1441 – Jordemaine, Margery: burned at Smithfield, England, on 27 October, 1441.

1446-1447 – 3 burned in Savoy between 1446 and 1447.

1453 – 7 killed at Marmande, France, in 1453.

1455 – 1 burned at Locarno, Italy, in 1455.

1459 – 100,000+ slaughtered by Vlad (Dracula), The Impaler.

1459 – "Many" burned in Arras, France in 1459.

1460 – Jennin, (first name unknown): burned at Cambrai, France, in 1460.

1470 – 2 burned in Burgundy, France, in 1470.

1472 – 3 burned at Forno-Rivara, Italy, in 1472.

1474 – 2 burned at Levone, in Italy, in 1474.

1475 – 5 burned at Forno, Italy, in 1475.

1479 – 12 women and "several" men burned at Edinburgh, in 1479.

1482 – 4 burned at Metz, Germany, in 1482.

1482-1486 – 48 burned at Constance, between 1482-1486.

1484 – December 9 The Bull of Innocent VIII, decreeing Inquisitors Sprenger and Kramer, authors of Malleus Maleficarum-, rights to "be empowered to proceed to the just correction, imprisonment, and punishment of any persons, without let or hindrance, in every way as if the provinces, townships, dioceses, districts, territories, yea, even the persons and their crimes in this kind were named and particularly designated in Our letters.".

1484 – 2 burned at Toulouse, France, in 1484.

1485(ca) – 41 witches of unknown name at Lombardy, in the domains of the Duke of Austria, County of Burbia. This witch was judged by 55 year old Inquisitor of Como and was eventually burned.

1485(ca) – Walpurgis at either the diocese of Strasburg or Constance, in the town of Hagenau or Ratisbon accused of power of preserving silence by burning first-born sons in an oven and was eventually burned.

1485(pre) – Agnes at Constance, twenty-eight German miles from the town of Ratisbon in the direction of Salzburg accused of causing hail storms in the field of Kuppel. This witch was judged by Justice named Gelre and was eventually tortured and burned.

1485(pre) – Hengst at the diocese of Constance accused of curing people.

1485(pre) – Nembroth, the English Nimrod accused of magic and encouraging people to worship fire.

1485(pre) – Stadlin at Boltingen, a town in the ducy and diocese of Lausanne accused of inducing miscarriage with a serpent. This witch was judged by John Nider and was eventually burned.

1485(pre) – Staufer at Berne accused of changing into a mouse and was eventually stabbed. See more in Malleus Maleficarum, p. 148.

1485(pre) – Zoroastre accused of study of the stars.

1485(pre) – Bath - Woman at Ratisbon accused of raising tempests and was eventually burned. See more in Malleus Maleficarum, p. 97.

1485 – Anna von Mindelheim at Constance, twenty-eight German miles from the town of Ratisbon in the direction of Salzburg accused of causing hail storms in the field of Kuppel. This witch was judged by Justice named Gelre and was eventually tortured and burned.

1485 – 2 burned in Chaucy, France in 1485.

1485(ca) – Inquisitor of Como.

1486 – Maximilian I, Emperor of Germany and King of the Romans signs papers in Brussels giving permission to Sprenger and Kramer to carry out their duties, and commanding cooperation with them.

1488 – 1 died in prison, at Metz, Germany 1488.

1488 – 1 executed at Brieg, Germany, on 19 July, 1488.

1488 – 1 executed at Juxney, Germany, on 22 September, 1488.

1488 – 1 executed at Metz, Germany, on 2 September, 1488.

1488 – 1 executed at Salney, Germany, on 3 July, 1488.

1488 – 1 executed at Vigey, Germany, on 15 September, 1488.

1488 – 2 executed at Juxney, Germany, on 19 August, 1488.

1488 – 2 executed at Mairange, Germany, on 25 June, 1488.

1493-1541 – Paracelsus – Physician who claimed that everything he learned came from an old witch.

1500's – Amalaric, Madeline: burned in France in mid-1500's.

1500's – Bragadini, Mark Antony: beheaded in Italy in the 1500's.

1500(ca) – 1 executed in France circa 1500.
